Each of us is constantly bombarded by printed information in books,newspapers billboards,and mail.Design for literacy that focuses on these symbolic environments enables students to use this information.Additionally,students are bom barded by information that has been processed by television,film,radio,and variety of computer programs~Adults and children alike live in a world where symbols represent little more than other symbols (e.g.,credit cards stand for money and money stands for purchasing power)~The art of being literate--that is,to be able to derive knowledge from and participate fully in this symbolic environment--requires capabilities and activities beyond those that frame a predominantly print oriented environment.
Must educators abandon all their existing understandings in order to embrace the electronic technologies within the design ofliteracyinstruetion?Certainly not.Just because we invented print does not mean we stopped talking.Just because we have invented an array of electronic information environments does not mean we will stop reading~Instead,literacy is
..a concept that assumes different definitions in different places,at different times,as conditions warrant.Consequently,different contexts and groups evolve definitions of literacy that have a diversity of content and strive to inculcate those definitions among their members.(Harmon,1987,p.96)
Much of what educators have learned in the long years of designing literacy instruction suggests a framework for conceptualizin'g literacy in the "supersymbolic" age of the electronic technologies~This framework centers on an understanding of how a variety of technologies including books use symbols to represent ideas,what cognitive strategies are necessary to interpret the messages embedded in these diverse symbolic forms,and how patterns of discourse forms organize information.
