The creation of air-turbine expansion coolers made it possible to develop new production processes in various branches of industry,including the rubber and tire industries,using cold air in a temperature range of from -60 to -110℃.In this range of temperatures,air-turbine expansion coolers have considerable design and operational advantages over vapor-compression coolers (the use of a large temperature drop in the chambers,of up to 30℃; use of air as a cooling agent and cold carrier ,makes it possible to dispense with the heat exchangers necessary for vapor-compression coolers without loss of energy efficiency).Using air-turbine expansion coolers is especially efficient for freezing and cooling products.
In the present paper two processes are examined which were developed by the Air-Turbine Cooler Special Design Office An cooperation with other industries.These processes use air-turbine expansion coolers.They are the treatment of rubber technical ware after vulcanization,and reworking of worn tires.
It is known that after rubber technical ware is molded,there remains on it a flash which is a thin-walled ridge encircling the part along the whole perimeter of the compression-mold joint.The thickness of this ridge depends on the condition of the joint surface and on how tightly the two halves of the mold were pressed together.
An analysis of the laboriousness of the production of parts for molds,which analysis can be done by production methods now in use,shows that approximately 40% of all expenditures on production of rubber technical ware molds are spent on the process of eliminating the ridge.At present the ridge is removed manually,mechanically using various kinds of trimmers or blanking instruments,and by freezing followed by tumbler polishing or vibration treatmeat.However,these methods cannot solve the problem of mechanizing portions of the rubber-technical-ware finishing process after vulcanization,since there is a very large assortment of parts of different configurations,sizes,weights,rubber brand,and consumer specifications.
In order to solve the problem of eliminating the ridge from molded rubber technical ware,the ATC SDO and the All-Union Scientific-Research Institute of Rubber-BearingPlants created the NVUD-2 apparatus for treatment of the products by pellets,the parts having been prexdously frozen by cold generated by the MTKhM1-25 air-turbine expansion cooler.
The new production process consists essentially of the following.Rubber technical ware loaded into the working chamber of the shot-blasting apparatus is transported and turned by a conveyor belt and simultaneously cooled by air coming from the air-turbine expansion coolers at temperatures of from -80 to-110~.The cold air causes a rapid hardening of the ridge,which is 0.2-0.6 mm thick.The parts which have considerably more mass do not cool and do not lose their elasticity.After the ridge hardens,the parts are bombarded with steel pellets,which knock off the ridge without damaging the parts or their appearance.The air emerging from the working chamber is directed into an air-cleaning system,and after passing through this,it enters a turboexpansion engine (Fig.1).
The two air-turbine expansion coolers make it possible if necessary to proceed at an accelerated rate to required production temperatures as low as -ll0℃.
