The bungalow for Soup Kitchen is located on D.N Nagar,J.P.road,Andheri West,Mumbai.Though it only has one room,it means a lot to the street children who live in this area.The bungalow is not only a room,but also a big family to these children who are roofless,rootless and alienated from the society.
Suvarna,the only full time teacher hired by VYF,goes to the small bungalow every afternoon from Monday to Friday.Having been working for soup kitchen project for 7 years,Suvarna have already had a great love for these children.By sticking small cards with simple English and Hindi words,drawing beautiful pictures on the blackboard,Sunvana decorates this room on her own,in order to make a cozy and comfortable environment for these children.
From 1:00pm to 4:30pm is the opening time of soup kitchen room.Due to their uncertain living place and other reasons,the number of the children keeps changing everyday,from around 10 to more than 20.Non-Formal Education is an important component of Soup Kitchen project.Suvarna,together with other two volunteer teachers:Munira and Purvi,teach them basic national language via using pictures and telling stories.So far there are?Children have learnt how to read and write simple sentences and numbers from 1 to 100 since soup kitchen project began to implement.Without learning national language,they can never find a relatively good job to live on themselves in the future.Teachers here also teach the children how to prevent themselves from natural disaster like flood.
Besides Nor-Formal Education,offering nutritional food and shower facilities to keep street children physical healthy are also the equally important part of the soup kitchen project.Being constantly exposed to the unhealthy conditions of living on the street,the street children suffer from hunger and a range of ailments.VYF distributes clean and nutritional snacks which can help them stay away from starvation to these children every day before they go home.In the monsoon,children can also get high quality umbrella from VYF.A small washroom is available in the bungalow where these children can wash themselves .
We also try our best to create great opportunities to let these children be in touch fresh things by taking them to the zoo,having picnic in the park,going boating and fishing in the lake and so on,which broadens their horizons,enriches their knowledge and also lets them be more confident.
